We as teachers are used to taking part in Halloween with our students, let this year be no exception. The global pandemic has changed the way we interact with our classes and many traditional Halloween activities that we take part in may not be possible this year due to social distancing. I have created this blog post which consists of different ways we can celebrate Halloween virtually with our students.
Halloween is going to look a bit different this year, as many traditional Halloween activities may not be possible due to social distancing. This blog contains different ways you can celebrate Halloween virtually with your students.
Virtual Costume Contest
Dressing up in different and exciting costumes is the most fun part of Halloween, students get to show their creativity with the costumes they choose to wear. To celebrate Halloween virtually, you can ask your students to dress up and show off their costumes on a video call. You can create an award ceremony where you email out certificates to students based on their costumes, you can set different categories of certificates such as funniest, scariest, cutest, etc.
Halloween Themed 'Pretend To' Movement Activity
It's important to keep our students active especially while they are stuck at home, this activity will get students up and make them move around. You can make a list of Halloween themed 'Pretend To' activity slides, this activity can include actions such as pretend to walk like a zombie or smile like a Jack-o-lantern. This activity can easily be done virtually.
Virtual Scavenger Hunt
If you find your students are getting tired during a virtual session, how about hosting a virtual scavenger hunt for them. Select a random assortment of Halloween themed items such as candies or pumpkins and tell your students to find those items around their houses. This activity will surely get students excited and ensure they stay active for the rest of the virtual session.
Stand Up Sit Down
Keeping students attentive during virtual sessions has been an issue, you check how attentive your students are you can create this activity. It can easily be created through any presentation software and presented during the virtual sessions. This activity involves you reading out Halloween inspired questions/statements for each student, students that agree with the statement have to stand up and those that do not to remain sitting down. Questions/statements that may be included in this activity can be 'Stand Up If... You picked what you are wearing on Halloween.
Halloween 'Who Am I?' Riddles
A fun brain teaser activity can be a fun way to freshen up your student's minds during virtual sessions, quizzing them with fun tests keeps their minds more engaged during virtual sessions. Creating a Halloween themed Riddle activity might just do the trick, it will get your students in the Halloween spirit. The activity can consist of riddles such as I am orange and round, I have a light inside. Who am I? Answer: I am Jack-o-lantern. You can award special virtual stickers to those students that guess the riddles correct encouraging them to participate more.
Halloween Themed Would You Rather...?
It is important to develop decision-making skills among our students, giving them the chance to choose between different options improves how they deal with different situations. As teachers, it will us a better understanding of the likes and disciplines of each one of our students. This activity will help your students develop this skill, the activity gives students the option of choosing between two Halloween themed scenarios. For example, would you rather watch a scary movie or read a scary book?
Halloween Zoomed In
Image recognition is an essential skill that students will need to develop, as teachers it is important that we test our students regularly in order to ensure that they are developing this skill. Find Halloween-themed pictures then zooming in one certain part of the picture and asking students to answer what the picture shows. This activity can be done over zoom sessions and can be a fun activity at the beginning of a session.
Musical Freeze
You can create a Halloween-themed 'Musical Freeze' activity where you play certain Halloween songs and have a dance-off with your students, then in the middle just stop the song asking your students to freeze in position, for the ones that do not freeze get eliminated. This activity is a fun way to let some steam off.
