Virtual Christmas Class Party Ideas!

(Click on pictures to view them as links)

This year has not been easy on any of us, the pandemic has essentially changed the way we do things. It has affected the way we interact with our students and how we are not able to have a personal connection with them through virtual sessions. Let's all be honest the classes haven't been as much fun. I've felt this with my students and decided to create some activities that might help get some fun back into my class. It is important that our students have a fun time while learning new concepts. We will not let this pandemic stop us from doing the best for our students, it's nearly Christmas and our students deserve fun activities to end this year off. Since this is the season of giving, I have listed some of the Christmas themed ideas I came up with below, feel free to go through them and try them out in your own classes.

Scavenger Hunt

Get students running around their house with this fun game. To play this with your students, make a list of Christmas themed items that students can find around their house such as; candy cane, Christmas lights, gingerbread cookie etc. Instruct your students to go look for the items around their house, the student who finds and presents the item to the class first gets 1 point added to their scorecard, the winner can receive a prize of your choosing.

Would You Rather...?

It is important to develop decision-making skills among our students, giving them the chance to choose between different options improves how they deal with different situations. As teachers, it will give us a better understanding of the likes and dislikes of each one of our students. This activity will help your students develop this skill, the activity gives students the option of choosing between two Christmas themed scenarios such as: would you rather meet a talking reindeer or a talking snowman. You are encouraged to add as many Christians themed scenarios as possible, this activity has proven to be a huge success in my classes.

Santa Says

This is a great activity for getting our students moving, it will keep them physically active while they are following along with simple instructions. This activity is fairly similar to the game ' Simon Says' except with a Christmas twist of course. To play, students will have to follow what Santa says. For example, Santa says touch your head, all students will need to touch their heads.

Who Am I Riddles?

A fun brain teaser activity can be a fun way to freshen up your student's minds during virtual sessions, quizzing them with fun tests keeps their minds more engaged during virtual sessions. Creating a Christmas themed Riddle activity might just do the trick, it will get your students in the holiday spirit. The activity can consist of riddles such as; I have a white beard, I wear a red suit, I say 'ho, ho, ho'. Who am I? Answer: I am Santa. You can award special virtual stickers to those students that guess the riddles correct encouraging them to participate more.

Christmas Pretend To

It's important to keep our students active especially while they are stuck at home, this activity will get students up and moving. You can make a list of Christmas themed 'Pretend To' activity slides, this activity can include actions such as pretend to laugh like Santa.

Virtual Christmas Gifts

Due to the situation caused by COVID-19, most of us will not be able to give gifts to our students this Christmas. To give students virtual gifts, you can create a PowerPoint and add pictures of items that kids may like. For example, students will pick a number and the number will take them on another slide which contains a picture of their virtual gift such as; a picture of a camera. This activity can be used as a substitute gift for your students. Even though students will not receive physical gifts they can still feel excited to find out what virtual gift they will get!

I hope the ideas that I shared in this blog gave you the inspiration to create activities for your students, the virtual sessions can never be the same as in-person classes but doing fun activities with our students helps us maintain a fun relationship with each of our students.

I've put together a list of 'turkey-themed' Google Slides activities that you can assign your students to do through Google Classroom. My Pet Turkey This activity is perfect to teach creative writing, students will have a lot of fun creating their own imaginary pet turkey. Students can name their turkey, decide the gender, age, color of feathers, height, weight, turkey's favourites, interesting facts about their turkey, special talents their turkey has and write all about it.  (Click Here) Where Is The Turkey?
